Peter Navarro Freed From Prison After Contempt Conviction
Former Trump Aide Served Time for Defying House Subcommittee
Navarro Released on Wednesday After Four-Month Sentence
Former White House adviser Peter Navarro was released from a Miami federal prison on Wednesday after serving a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress. Navarro, 75, was convicted in February for refusing to cooperate with a House subcommittee investigating the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.
Navarro was one of several Trump allies who were subpoenaed by the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack. He refused to testify or produce documents, arguing that the committee lacked jurisdiction over him and that his testimony was protected by executive privilege.
The House voted to hold Navarro in contempt, and the Justice Department indicted him on criminal charges. He was convicted in January and sentenced to four months in prison.
Navarro's release comes as the House Select Committee continues its investigation into the January 6 riot. The committee has subpoenaed numerous witnesses and collected thousands of documents as it seeks to determine the causes of the attack and make recommendations to prevent future violence.
Navarro's conviction is a significant victory for the House Select Committee and sets a precedent for holding individuals accountable for refusing to cooperate with congressional investigations.
