NPPD in Phase 2 of Nuclear Plant Feasibility Study

Nebraska Communities Under Consideration

16 Sites Identified in Phase 1

LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) has announced that it has reached Phase 2 of a feasibility study to assess potential sites for a new nuclear power plant in Nebraska. The study, which began in 2021, involves identifying and evaluating potential sites based on factors such as geology, water availability, and transmission infrastructure.

In Phase 1 of the study, NPPD identified 16 potential sites in 15 Nebraska communities. These sites will now be further evaluated in Phase 2, which is expected to take about a year. During this phase, NPPD will narrow down the list of sites to four or five finalists.

The feasibility study is part of NPPD's long-term planning process to meet the future energy needs of its customers. The district currently operates two nuclear power plants in Nebraska, Cooper Nuclear Station and Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station. The new plant would complement these existing facilities and provide additional clean, reliable energy for the state.
