DURF! Wants to Talk to All Parties: Is the Door Open for Vlaams Belang?
Reacting to the results of a poll, party leader Fouad Ahidar said he wanted to talk to all parties, including Vlaams Belang, to see how they could prevent N-VA from forming government.
DURF! Leader Fouad Ahidar said that he was willing to talk to all parties, including Vlaams Belang, to discuss forming a government that would keep N-VA out of power.
His comments came after a poll showed that N-VA would likely be the biggest party in the Flemish parliament after the May 26 elections, but would fall short of a majority.
Ahidar said that he was open to talking to any party that shared his goal of keeping N-VA out of power, even if that meant talking to Vlaams Belang, a far-right party that has been accused of racism and xenophobia.
Vlaams Belang has been shunned by other mainstream parties in the past, but Ahidar said that he was not afraid to talk to them.
"I'm not afraid to talk to anyone," Ahidar said. "I think it's important to talk to everyone, even if you don't agree with them."
Ahidar's comments have been met with mixed reactions.
Some people have praised him for his willingness to talk to all parties, while others have criticized him for being willing to talk to Vlaams Belang.
It remains to be seen whether Ahidar will be able to form a government that excludes N-VA. However, his comments have certainly raised eyebrows and opened up the possibility of a new political landscape in Flanders.
According to a recent poll by De Standaard, N-VA is projected to win the most seats in the Flemish parliament, but would fall short of a majority.
The poll also found that DURF! is projected to win 9 seats, making it the third largest party in the Flemish parliament.
If the poll results hold true, Ahidar could play a key role in forming a government that excludes N-VA.
However, it remains to be seen whether other parties will be willing to work with DURF!, given its willingness to talk to Vlaams Belang.
